The Cape Wind Project

The Cape Wind Project is the first major windfarm destined for offshore in the USA.

  Project Description

The system will consist of 130 turbines capable of supplying a maximum of 420 megawatts, 3/4 of Cape Cod power. The town of Barnstable will be the connection point to the existing electrical grid, thus will offset utility power to serve most of the Cape and offshore islands.

Construction is scheduled to begin this year with completion in 2005. That's fast for so much power!

  Cape Wind Location

About 5 miles offshore on Horseshoe Shoal in Nantucket Sound.

  NIMBYs protest

As expected, NIMBYs are fighting the project. (Not In My Backyard!) Whatever the renewable source, there will be those who are offended by it and who will complain vociferously. There are also CAVEs -- those Citizens Against Virtually Everything.
