Abstract: Applications of radiofrequency technologies in the infrared have recently been demonstrated. This talk is based on the theme that the ability to assess and design for the impedance properties of infrared devices is integral to the utility of such applications. Within that theme we will discuss: (1) the assessment of antenna input impedance, (2) reflectarrays, and (3) impedance surfaces. We will describe the optical analogue of the radiofrequency vector network analyzer implemented in interferometric homodyne scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy and demonstrated as a means of measuring IR antenna impedance. The impedance properties of complex surfaces will be presented with demonstrated application in IR reflectarrays which form the basic building block for a new kind of optical system. Impedance surfaces will be described, and research towards the applications of IR waveguides and antennas will be discussed.
