General FAQs

Q: What is SECES about?
A: The Series of Electrical & Computer Engineering Seminars (SECES) is a series of invited/distinguished technical talks and lectures organized by the ECE department at FIT. The series is held during the Fall and Spring semesters and features academicians, researchers and scientists from outside organizations and institutions, as well as from the inside, namely, FIT faculty. Typically, the series hosts about 12 talks per year; all of them take place on the main FIT campus in Melbourne, Florida.

Q: What is a distinguished lecture?
A: Occasionally, SECES is able to invite speakers that have distinguished themselves in their respective research field and that enjoy wide recognition by their peers due to the significant impact of their accomplishments. We refer to these talks as distinguished lectures.

Q: What is this website about?
A: The website offers you detailed information about SECES Upcoming talks (title, abstract, speaker bio/photo, date, location) , Past talks, Location and Parking information. It also allows you to keep track of which talks you plan to attend, among other things.

Q: Who can attend SECES talks?
A: SECES talks are free and open to the public; anyone can attend them. We only ask you to Register through this website and RSVP for the talks you are planning to attend ahead of time.

Q: What is RSVP?
A: It is an acronym for the French expression "répondez s'il vous plaît", meaning "please respond." In our context we mean it as “confirm your attendance.”

Q: Why do you require RSVPing for the seminar talks?
A: By having interested people RSVP for talks, we hope to obtain good attendance level estimates. This will allow us to make better arrangements prior to the talk and improve various aspects of our seminar series in the future. Besides, registering with our website allows its users to receive automatic alerts for event changes, receive automatic reminders for upcoming RSVPed talks and participate in the Starz competition.

Q: What are Starz?
A: Once you have registered with our website and filled out your profile indicating your attendee type (e.g. student, faculty, etc.), you can earn Starz each time your attendance at a talk is confirmed. The amount of Starz you will earn per attended talk varies on what type of attendee you are according to the table shown on the Rules page. Also, you can check how many Starz you have earned so far by visiting your Starz page.

Q: How do I take part in the Starz competition?
A: If you indicate that you want to be included in the public Starz rankings under the Settings page, your name will appear according to your Starz rank on the relevant Hall of Fame pages.

Q: What are Commemorative Starz?
A: Each distinguished SECES lecture features its own unique, special edition star. If your attendance at a distinguished lecture is confirmed, you will be awarded the star commemorating that talk. Commemorative stars do not count towards your Starz ranking.

Q: Who do I contact, if I have further questions about SECES?
A: Please feel free to Contact Us via the department’s administrative assistant or the SECES coordinator.
